Robert Acton Blandy. Miner, Leader, Legend – A Boer War Epic
The latest Historical Occasional Paper from Thematic Trails tells the story behind a tomb in St James the Great churchyard in Radley, a plaque on the wall of St Nicholas Church, Abingdon, and The Warren estate off the Radley Road in Abingdon. The story starts at the Memorial Crescent in Kingston Bagpuize with a quest by the author, Rob Belk, to uncover the story of a man from the Blandy family. Rob takes us back through formative days around The Close, made famous in Newbolt's Vitai Lampada, to the majestic Stormberg mountains of South Africa, mining for coal, the Boer War, leadership and selfless death. He uncovers a legend of 'El Cid' salvation - and two identical tombs, 6,000 miles apart.

Copies of the 24-page A4 booklet, which has over 30 illustrations and a detailed Blandy family tree, can be obtained for £2 from the Longworth & District History Society or ordered from Thematic Trails
